Mathematical model of simple circuit in chicken brain raises fundamental questions about neural circuitry

This sounds pretty interesting. I'm a believer that there are simple abstraction layers that will help us to understand neural, and other biological networks. In this case, though it seems odd that several cells could be modeled as one "neuron." if one cell could do the job, it is odd that the circuit was not paired down to that. Then again, can't assume that Evolution is always so elegant.
